Directed evolution (DE) is a technique of using proteins or nucleic acids for achieving user-defined goal. Chemical Nobel Prize, 2018 was awarded to Frances Arnold for inventing directed enzyme evolution for better enzymes. She shared the prize along with George Smith and Gregory Winter for their contributions to create better antibodies. The directed evolution of enzymes is now routinely used to develop new catalysts with various applications, such as in environmentally friendly production of chemicals and renewable fuels. In her Nobel lecture, F. Arnold describes how lessons from nature inspired the development of methods for directed evolution.

Rather than showing the “power of evolution,” these Nobel winners show that intelligent design and directed effort was needed to accomplish anything beneficial to humanity. There is no power of naturalistic evolution to create anything demonstrated here. The Nobel Prize: Directing Evolution Nobel Prize recipient Frances Arnold joins Tim to talk about winning a Nobel Prize honor for her pioneering work in “directed evolution,” which harnesses the power of evolution to enhance products throughout society – from biofuels and pharmaceuticals, to agriculture, chemicals, paper products and more. Combinatorial procedures have become established in recent years as alternatives to rational design in drug research, particularly when no structural information is available. This article presents the principle that was originally developed by three scientists and was honored with the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2018.

Figure 1. Evolution towards directed evolution There are three main steps in directed evolution: mutagenesis, selection/screening of the desired enzyme property, and decision of which parental genes will proceed to the next round of evolution. The experiments can be performed in vivo, inside cells (bacteria or yeast), or through in vitro transcription–translation systems. Directed evolution has been used by Arnold and others to make all manner of molecules that would otherwise require lengthy, expensive, and often environmentally unfriendly syntheses.
